Luis Escareno Medina

Luis Escareno Medina is a Cell and Molecular Biology student at UCSD and is a passionate advocate for biodiversity conservation. Before transferring to UCSD he has done various research projects as a UCSB Smithsonian Scholar. A memorable project was to study the efficacy of restoring oak chaparral communities on Santa Cruz Island burn scars using the Island Scrub Jays caching behavior to disperse acorns. This exposure to the field allowed Luis to solidify his love for birds and some of his favorite bird memories have been a bald eagle on Santa Cruz Island, and Crested Guan, Red Capped Manakin, and a handful of antbirds on Barro Colorado Island.
