Building Nest Boxes for Anstine's Cavity Nesters -FAMILY FRIENDLY!

New Box with TagA nest box building workshop will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2018 where you will have an opportunity to help Anstine’s cavity nesting birds multiply by providing nest boxes for them. You’ll learn about the lives of cavity nesting birds and nest box construction. Each participant will assemble a nest box, decorate and autograph it for posterity. Nest boxes will be placed around the Anstine-Audubon Preserve where our cavity nesters can find them and begin using them next spring. The workshop will be led by Richard Griebe, a long time Audubon member and birder. He has volunteered at Mission Trails Regional Park for the last 15 years working with a group of dedicated volunteers who monitor about 100 boxes throughout the park. You will learn about the many interesting things than can happen as birds struggle to fulfill their reproductive mission. The project supplements the limited natural nesting sites with these human-made assists. Without this effort, many birds suffer serious population declines. The workshop format includes an overview of western cavity nesters, true tales from the field and a hands on experience constructing a nest box from a prepared kit. No previous experience necessary.
