San Diego Audubon Society (SDAS) field trips are free (except as noted below)and open to all. The Thomas Guide is used to provide trip locations for most of the trips below. Please carry water, snacks, sunscreen, binoculars and a hat. Hiking shoes are recommended for all trips. Questions? Contact Rich Breisch or call at (858) 278-6280. Fire, flood, road closures, and other unexpected events can change our locations.


Field Trip Leaders Wanted:

San Diego Audubon's Field Trip Committee is recruiting volunteers to lead and co-lead upcoming field trips. Knowledge and experience about birds and habitats is important as is willingness and enthusiasm. We also need help planning and setting up future field trips. Birding at Silverwood

Silverwood is open to the public on Sundays from 9 am to 4 pm, October through July. Guided nature walks are conducted at 10 am and 1:30 pm October through June. Arrange group tours by contacting Phil Lambert, the resident manager, at (619) 443-2998.

Kumeyaay Lake and Grasslands at Mission Trails Regional Park

Common Moorhen, Green Heron, Tricolored Blackbird, and Least Bell’s Vireo may be found near Kumeyaay Lake. In the grassland areas, we’ll look for White-tailed Kite, Lazuli Bunting, Western Meadowlark, Grasshopper Sparrow, Blue Grosbeak, swallows, and kingbirds.

San Diego River at Robb Field

This field trip will occur in conjunction with other activities along the river as part of San Diego River Days. A this time of year it is possible to see Osprey, Least Terns, Little Blue Herons, and maybe even Clapper Rails.

Fledgling Birders at Lake Murray

This field trip visits the northwest side of Lake Murray where participants will be taken to native and park associated habitats, including sage scrub, eucalyptus trees, willows and freshwater marsh along the lake. A mixture of bird species will be found such as Great Blue Heron and Snowy Egret, Osprey and Red-tailed Hawk, as well as migrant and resident land birds.

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve (Extension)

Most people who visit Torrey Pines either go to the beach or to the portions of the park with cliffs that overlook the ocean. The part of the reserve that we will visit is in Del Mar. We’ll look for Greater Roadrunner, Rufous and Allen’s Hummingbirds, California Gnatcatchers, Yellow-breasted Chats, and other birds.

Tecolote Canyon Natural Park

Tecolote Canyon is one of several protected urban canyons in the San Diego area that support native plant communities and associated bird life. Birds that that are here for the entire year include hawks, Anna’s Hummingbird, California Thrasher, House Wren, Wrentit, and both California and Spotted Towhees.

Palomar Mountain State Park

Palomar Mountain State Park is at an elevation of roughly 5,000 feet, it is one of the best places in the county to see high elevation birds of forests and clearings. These include Band-tailed Pigeons, Mountain Quails, Red-breasted and White-breasted Nuthatches, Western Tanager, Purple Martin, Olive-sided Flycatcher, and Steller’s Jays.

Otay Valley Regional Park

Otay Valley Regional Park extends 13 miles through the Otay Valley from west of I-5 along the Otay River to the Lower and Upper Otay Lakes. The trail from the Rios Avenue trailhead passes through coastal sage scrub and riparian woodland. Often seen birds are Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Mallard, Western Scrub-Jay, Song Sparrow, California Towhee, Spotted Towhee, and Bewick's Wren.

Lindo Lake

Lindo Lake is an urban park in the town of Lakeside. The lake has a variety of ducks, song birds, and herons. Birds likely to be seen include Wood Duck, Eurasian Collared Dove, Western Bluebird, kingbirds, and nesting egrets.
