What is a Tanager? Using DNA to Understand Tropical Birds
Presented by Kevin Burns, PhD
Friday, February 26, 6:30 pm - social, 7 pm - program
This talk by Keven Burns, a biologist with San Diego State University, will offer the current research on the neotorpical tanager. Tanagers, best known for thier brilliant colors, also include drab species and are equally diverse in their diets, bill size and shape, and behavior. Burns
will discuss how DNA sequences are helping to reveal
what species belong to the tanagers, and surprisingly,
what species do not belong to the tanagers. He will also
cover the main groups of tanagers and show how this
new classification of tanagers can help us understand the
evolution of different colors, beaks, and behaviors.
To get to the Joyce Beers Community Center, Take Washington Street east from the 163 Freeway, then turn right on Richmond and right on Cleveland. At the stop sign, turn right (passing the Joyce Beers Community Center on your right, next to the Aladdin restaurant). Go to the end of Vermont, and turn left into the underground parking area, which is free. If you wish to try to park in the above-ground lot, where spaces may be hard to find, instead of turning right at the stop sign, go straight across Vermont to enter the lot.
WORK PARTIES
RESTORE WILDLIFE HABITAT AT NAVAJO CANYON
Saturday, FEBRUARY 13, 9am - noon
You're invited to help the San Diego Flyway Cities Coalition transform Navajo Canyon into an urban refuge for wildlife and people. The San Diego Audubon Society, the City of San Diego Parks & Rec Dept, Urban Corps, and San Diego Canyonlands are joining together to restore canyon wildlife habitat by planting native shrubs and trees in a degraded section of Navajo Canyon.
Volunteers should wear long pants, sturdy shoes, and a hat. We'll provide the gloves, tools, water and snacks. If you have one, feel free to bring your own reusable water bottle to help us reduce paper cup waste. For more information or to sign up, contact Shannon Dougherty at dougherty@sandiegoaudubon.org or (858) 273-7800 x101. As required by SD City Park & Rec Dept, for volunteers 17 and under, a parent or guardian must sign a waiver for each child at the start of the event. Children 13 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
Directions: From I-8, exit I-8 at Waring Rd. (Exit 9) and head north. After 1.5 miles, take a right on Mound Ave. The canyon entrance is located at the intersection of Mound Ave & Carthage St (where Mound Ave curves sharply to the left). Street parking is available. Click here for a Google map.
NESTING HABITAT IMPROVEMENT FOR WESTERN SNOWY PLOVER
Saturday, February 20, 9am - noon
You’re invited to join the San Diego Audubon Society for a unique opportunity to improve nesting habitat for the threatened Western Snowy Plover at the Sweetwater Unit of the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge Complex in Chula Vista. We’ll be enhancing this important nesting habitat by removing invasive ice plant and spreading oyster shells to create suitable nesting grounds for the plovers. You don’t need any prior experience, just a willingness to get your hands dirty and have fun!
Volunteers should work in old clothes (ice plant stains!), long pants and boots or sturdy shoes and wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats. We will provide work gloves, tools, snacks and water. If you have one, feel free to bring your own reusable water bottle to help us reduce paper cup waste.
Directions: From I-5, exit Mile of Cars/Bay Marina Drive and turn west. Turn left on Marina Way. Meet at the entrance of the bike path located on the east side of the street just as Marina Way curves to the right. Click here for a Google map. Parking is available along Marina Way or west of the marina at Pepper Park. Lost? Call Shannon Dougherty at 619-550-9529. Note: Do not ‘google’ directions to ‘San Diego National Wildlife Refuge’ – this will take you to the Chula Vista Nature Center.
If you have questions and/or will be attending as a group of 10 or more people, please contact Shannon Dougherty at dougherty@sandiegoaudubon.org or by phone at 858-273-7800 x101.
