This walk along the west rim of the Lagunas will be approximately 3.5 miles round trip on well developed trails with easy to moderate elevation changes. We will go through mixed forest habitat, as well as, meadow grasslands, with the goal being the “Water-of-the-Woods pond area. In addition to the typical montane species, we will look for Olive-sided, Ash-throated, and Pacific-slope Flycatchers, Western Kingbirds, Western Tanagers, Bullock’s Orioles, Purple Finches, and Lawrence’s Goldfinches. Exceptionally, the Clark’s Nutcrackers might still remain. Bring water, and be prepared for temperature changes. Porta-potties at the trailhead only.
Directions: From I-8 going east, exit on the Sunrise Highway (S-1), turn left (north). Proceed approximately 5 miles to the area of mile marker 19, across from the 2 blue Porta-potties. Parking is available on the wide shoulders of the highway there. A National Forest Service Adventure Pass ($5/day, $30/year), or a National Parks Senior Pass is required for legal parking. Allow just over 1 hour travel time from San Diego.
