Mast Park in Santee

Thomas Brothers Map 1231: B6

We will visit an area and trail that has not previously been visited on a SDAS birding walk, and goes west from the long-time parking area at Mast Park. The trail goes along the margin of the San Diego River, which at times seems to vanish underground, then surfaces to form open bodies of water. Eventually, it goes along the edge of the Carlton Hills Golf Course. Birds that we have seen here in May include our usual riparian residents, plus 3 swallows, 4 Warblers (including Orange-crowned, Yellow, Townsend’s, Wilson’s, and Common Yellowthroat), Black-headed Grosbeak, and Bullock’s Oriole. Easy walking on flat terrain. Restrooms at trailhead.

Directions: From Highway 52 going east, exit at Mission Gorge, and turn left. Proceed to Carlton Hills Blvd., turn left, continue over the bridge over the SD River, and immediately turn right into the parking area. Turn right into the dirt parking lot below where we will meet.
