2015 Avian Adventures
Border Birding for CondorsOctober 5-9, 2015
The San Diego Audubon Society invites you to join an Avian Adventures trip in search of the California Condor in Baja, California, Mexico. The trip, sponsored by SDAS, is operated by Andiamo Travel, a San Diego-based company specializing in nature travel and travel in Mexico. The trip begins and ends in San Diego.
The first stop on the 5-day trip border birding trip is the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve. We then travel to Estero Beach Resort, Ensenada, for an overnight and birding on a private marsh and the seaside.
Then we head up to the mountains of San Pedro Martir National Park, the Mexico release site for captive-bred California Condors. We’ll stop along the way at San Telmo de Abajo to look for the endemic Gray Thrasher. While based at the Meling Ranch, we will search the foothills for California Condors. We’ll meet a biologist working with the condor reintroduction program and visit the National Astronomical Observatory.
Departing the ranch, we’ll travel through the Mediterranean-climate of Baja’s wine country, stopping at wineries along the way. We’ll visit the pleasant Tecate town plaza, drive down the spectacular Rumorosa Grade to the desert, and bird the irrigation canals and agricultural fields of Mexicali, where we spend the night before returning to San Diego.
The cost of the trip is $1,350 per person, double occupancy, and includes transport, birding guide, accommodations, all meals with 1 drink, entry fees, and taxes and tips for included services such as meals. The single supplement is $230. Not included: tips and gratuities for the driver and birding guide. A valid passport is required to enter Mexico.
