San Diego Audubon Society (SDAS), a non-profit organization working to promote the protection and appreciation of birds, other wildlife, and their habitats in San Diego County, seeks part-time, on-call Naturalist Guides who have experience and passion for connecting children and adults to the natural world through experiential learning. Naturalist Guides lead small groups of students and families on hikes to nearby nature spaces, introducing the audience to San Diego’s native flora and fauna. If you have experience working with children and love sharing your passion for the outdoors with others, then San Diego Audubon wants to hear from you.

Summary of Responsibilities

• Teach fun, educational programs to diverse audiences, ranging in age from elementary through middle school students, about San Diego’s native habitats through hands-on, outdoor education programs.
• Programs include, but are not limited to: during-school field trips to wildlife refuges or San Diego Audubon sanctuaries, after-school enrichment programs in local canyons and open spaces, and weekend family hikes. See program descriptions below.
• This is a seasonal (September-June), hourly position that reports to the Director of Education.

Education Program Descriptions

• Co-lead nature hikes, with one other SDAS naturalist, to local canyons and open spaces located within a 15- minute walk from the school site (up to 20 students per group, plus after-school staff)
• Ability to commit to a four-week session (one day per week in the afternoons)

Silverwood Science Discovery
• Lead nature hikes along the trails of San Diego Audubon’s Silverwood Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Lakeside, CA (up to 12 students per group, plus chaperones)
• Assist Silverwood volunteers in teaching stations, including the birding station, wildlife tracking station, and Education Center station
• Ability to teach this program as scheduled during weekday, morning hours

Anstine Adventures
• Co-lead, with one other SDAS naturalist, our after-school nature programs at our Anstine-Audubon Nature Preserve in Vista, CA.
• Ability to commit to a three-week session (one day per week, usually Monday afternoon)

Sharing our Shores
• Lead or co-lead, with one other SDAS naturalist, our coastal and shorebird education program at local beaches and wildlife refuges, including teaching stations and participating in habitat restoration
• Ability to teach this program as scheduled during weekday, morning hours (usually Thursday and Friday mornings)

Weekend Family Hikes
• Provide fun, educational programs to diverse audiences, ranging in age from toddlers to grandparents, on hikes to nature spaces around San Diego County (occasional weekend mornings and afternoons)

Desired Skills & Qualifications

• Degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, education, or related field or experience leading outdoor education programs for youth and adults
• Excellent oral communication skills
• Ability to keep accurate records and submit Naturalist reports and paperwork in a timely manner
• Professional and safe conduct when working with teachers, after-school staff, chaperones, and students
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Ability to be flexible in both teaching style and schedule
• Ability to relate well to participants of all ages and backgrounds
• Understanding, interest, and knowledge of regional habitats, flora, and fauna
• A personal passion for connecting kids to nature
• Bilingual a plus

Other Job Requirements

• Must attend naturalist meetings and trainings (approximately once per month)
• Must have a valid driver’s license, excellent driving record, and reliable transportation
• Must be able to commit to at least two days a week of availability to teach morning, afternoon and weekend programs
• Must be able to hike up to three miles during a field session and be able to be outdoors in all weather conditions for extended periods of time
• Must be able to pass a background check and TB test
• Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

Start Dates

• Naturalist trainings are scheduled for mid-September 2017
• Programs begin October 2017


• $14-16 per hour, with opportunities for advancement
